The History of the Taj Mahal

Picture
The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra, India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in honor of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died while giving birth to their 14th child.

She died in 1631, and the construction of the Taj Mahal began in the same year. 22,000 laborers from all over Asia worked on the project. The cost to build the monument was approximately 32 million rupees ($715,000). It took 22 years to build.

The monument is made with all-white marble. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The following video shows a quick walkthrough of the Taj. It is a good overview if you do not have the time commitment for the entire virtual tour!
(Note: The tombs at the 1:15 mark are those of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.)
Sadly, after the Taj Mahal was built, Shah Jahan was placed under house arrest at nearby Agra Fort.
In the video below, the person walks through Agra Fort and shows the very view Shah Jahan had of the Taj Mahal from his window.
